Justice and Transparency in Freezing Assets to Combat Terrorism and Fuel Price Challenges in Nigeria

The Nigerian government recently took a strong step by directing banks and financial institutions to freeze the assets of individuals and bureau de change operators suspected of financing terrorism. This move aims to cut off funds that fuel violence and insecurity. While this action is necessary to protect citizens, it raises important questions about transparency and accountability. At the same time, Nigerians face another pressing challenge: the sharp rise in petrol prices, which is straining household budgets and increasing the cost of living. This post explores the balance between security measures and economic realities, emphasizing the need for fairness and openness in government actions.

The Importance of Freezing Terrorism-Linked Assets

Cutting off financial support to terrorist groups is a critical part of national security. The Central Bank of Nigeria’s circular dated June 24 requires banks to identify and freeze funds linked to six individuals and four bureau de change operators accused of supporting the Islamic State West Africa Province. This directive sends a clear message that financing terrorism will not be tolerated.

Freezing assets disrupts the ability of extremists to plan attacks, buy weapons, and recruit members. It protects ordinary Nigerians from kidnappings, bombings, and other violent acts. The government’s decisive action is a step in the right direction for peace and safety.

The Need for Transparency and Judicial Oversight

Despite the importance of these measures, the process must be transparent and subject to judicial review. Without clear guidelines and oversight, asset freezes risk becoming tools for political vendettas or silencing opposition voices. Nigerians deserve to know the evidence behind such decisions and have access to fair hearings.

Transparency builds trust between the government and the public. It ensures that innocent people are not unfairly targeted and that the rule of law prevails. Judicial oversight provides a check against abuse of power, protecting citizens’ rights while maintaining security.

Rising Petrol Prices and Its Impact on Nigerians

While supporting efforts to combat terrorism, many Nigerians are frustrated by the relentless increase in petrol prices. The National Bureau of Statistics reports that the average petrol price rose to ₦1,596.25 per litre in May 2026, a 55.31% increase compared to May 2025. In states like Edo and Bauchi, prices exceeded ₦1,700 per litre, while Adamawa recorded a "low" of ₦1,469.83 per litre.

This surge results from deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector and the weakening naira. However, it also highlights the government's failure to protect vulnerable citizens from the harsh effects of inflation. When fuel prices rise sharply, transportation and food costs increase, squeezing household budgets and pushing more families into poverty.

The Government’s Role in Cushioning the Blow

Market-based pricing can encourage efficiency, but it must be paired with policies that shield the most affected. Targeted subsidies for low-income families and investments in affordable public transport could ease the burden. Unfortunately, such measures remain limited or absent.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians see a disconnect between their struggles and the lifestyle of officials who travel in convoys of SUVs. This contrast fuels resentment and undermines confidence in leadership. Real leadership means taking responsibility and acting to protect citizens, not ignoring their hardships.

Balancing Security and Economic Well-being

The government faces a difficult task: securing the nation from terrorism while managing economic challenges. Both goals are essential, but they must be pursued with fairness and openness.

  • Security measures should include clear criteria for freezing assets and allow affected parties to appeal.

  • Economic policies should address the impact of fuel price hikes through social safety nets and infrastructure improvements.

  • Communication must be honest and empathetic, acknowledging citizens’ pain and explaining government actions.

This balance will help build a safer, more stable Nigeria where people feel protected and supported.

Moving Forward with Justice and Accountability

Nigerians want justice against terrorism and relief from economic hardship. The government’s efforts to freeze terrorist assets are welcome but must be transparent and accountable. At the same time, addressing the rising cost of living requires urgent attention and practical solutions.

Citizens deserve clear answers, not excuses. They need policies that protect their rights and livelihoods. By combining strong security with fair economic support, Nigeria can move toward a future where safety and prosperity go hand in hand.
