Nigeria Needs Roads Before Prestige Projects

Infrastructure should solve problems.

Too often, public debate focuses on projects that look impressive rather than projects that make everyday life easier.

A modern flyover may become a landmark.

But a well-built rural road can transform an entire local economy.

It allows farmers to reach markets.

It helps children get to school.

It makes it easier for ambulances, teachers and security personnel to reach communities that have been isolated for years.

If I were advising governors, I would encourage them to ask one simple question before approving any major project:

How many Nigerians will benefit from this investment every single day?

Some cities genuinely need flyovers because of traffic congestion.

Others would achieve far greater economic and social returns by repairing existing roads and connecting underserved communities.

Public infrastructure should not be judged by how impressive it looks during commissioning ceremonies.

It should be judged by how much it improves people's daily lives.
