Politics Shouldn't Decide Who You Can Shake Hands With

One thing I respected about Peter Obi's visit to Isaac Fayose was the message it sent.

You shouldn't become an enemy simply because you shook hands with someone from another political family.

The visit came after Fayose faced online attacks for meeting me, prompting Obi to distance himself from those attacking Fayose and to say many of the people behind the abuse were not his genuine supporters.

Nigeria's politics has become too personal.

We have reached a point where some people think speaking to someone from the "other side" is an act of betrayal.

That mindset is dangerous.

I believe the opposition leaders, and their supporters should compete with ideas, not with intimidation or online bullying.

Democracy becomes stronger when rivals can disagree fiercely during the day and still shake hands afterward.

If we lose that, we lose more than politics, we lose our unity.
